Solid |
|

Solid hardwood is 100% solid wood. Usually 3/4″ thick can only be nailed or stapled to wood sub floor. It cannot be glued or used on concrete. Thinner solid styles may be appropriated for glue-down or nail-down installation. |
Engineered |
|
|
Engineered hardwood is also 100% wood. It is manufactured by permanently bonding together multiple layers of solid wood in a cross ply construction. By having several ply’s laminated together it provides more dimensional stability. Usually 3/8″, 1/2″, or 7/16″ thick. Its cross-ply construction allows installation below or above grade even over concrete. It resist expansion and contraction caused by temperature and humidity changes. Engineered flooring is typically glued-down, stapled -down or floated over an existing floor. |

Floating |

Some types of engineered hardwood flooring can be installed over a pad where the tongue and groove is glued together and no adhesive is used to adhere to the surface below. This is called a “floating floor” installation. The Term “long strip” traditionally means the top hardwood wear layer of each engineered board is made up with a visual appearance of 2 or 3 narrower rows of hardwood boards. Each board will generally have between 17 and 35 pieces that make up the top layer of each panel. These boards themselves depending again on style chosen can be anywhere from 5–8″ inches wide and anywhere from 4-8′ feet long. The term strip refers to the number of boards side by side, which is referenced to as available strip styles.
