They’re often overlooked in home remodeling projects but can have a huge visual impact when handled by professionals. In some cases, homeowners want to remove outdated décor such as a popcorn ceiling texture (although, as with many trends, even popcorn ceilings have come back into style for some people) to have a smooth ceiling. Other kinds of textures are possible, however, depending on the look you want to achieve. Texture options include orange peel (though some feel it looks more like a damaged ceiling than a design choice), skip trowel, knockdown, stipple, swirls, fish scale, spray sand, combed, and lace. You might want to also give a more historical look with tin ceiling panels. Note that while textured ceilings offer a desirable sound-dampening quality, they are always more difficult to clean.
